First week of school we WILL begin swimming on Wednesday. Please have suits ready. Goggles are encouraged.
I encourage parents to help in the locker rooms K-2 (male and female). I also welcome parents to get in the pool with kids anytime.
In swimming we work on many activities, mainly on skills as listed below. We also do fun activities, games, and a survival day in which kids get to see what it's like to use your clothes as a floatation device. Each month the calendar is organized so the kids get two work days and one "try" day and one free day. When kids "try" they show me the skills they have been working on to advance in levels. Free days allow students to enjoy using their skills that we have worked hard on in a way that they get to choose what and how they are engaged, with safety always being the focus. Free days also allow me a chance to observe the students using those skills. I can see their comfort level and their willingness to explore.
At the end of each school year the 3rd-6th graders go to Rolling Hills. We have developed a "confidence test" that each student will take prior to going into the wave pool. Our goal is always the safety of our students and ensuring they possess that confidence and knowledge necessary to enjoy their wave pool experience.

If you wonder what kind of "swim" day your child has, here is the schedule for the year. W=Work day, T=Try (test) day, and F=Free Day. This is the general guide and I do my best to follow it. Occasionally it will adjust due to school schedule. Feel free to ask if you have questions. [email protected]
Swimming Skill Levels
I have created a bit more specific education and goals with the swimming programs. Students are all assessed to determine what level they are at and they can then work through the levels to improve at their own pace. Each week will be either a work week or a testing week. A work week means they are working on their skills with my help. On testing weeks they can ask to test a skill that they have practiced. Below are detailed descriptions of each level. I have recently added a level 6 and will upload that information soon. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Fundamental Aquatic Skills: This level is designed to help students gain confidence with floating in the water and starting to practice more formal swimming movements (e.g., kicking). Before starting Level Two, students must have demonstrated confidence with all Level One skills.
|
Stroke Development: This level is designed to help students develop greater coordination of their movements and develop basic proficiency with two strokes (front crawl and back crawl). Students also prepare to pass the first swim test. Before starting Level Three, students must have demonstrated confidence with all Level Two skills.
|
Stroke Improvement: This level is designed to help students further develop their proficiency with front crawl and back crawl and start learning about breaststroke. Before starting Level Four, students must have demonstrated confidence with all Level Three skills.
|
Stroke Refinement: This level is designed to help students further develop their proficiency with front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and start learning about the butterfly stroke.
