First week of school we WILL begin swimming on Wednesday. Please have suits ready. Goggles are encouraged.

I encourage parents to help in the locker rooms K-2 (male and female). I also welcome parents to get in the pool with kids anytime.

In swimming we work on many activities, mainly on skills as listed below. We also do fun activities, games, and a survival day in which kids get to see what it's like to use your clothes as a floatation device. Each month the calendar is organized so the kids get two work days and one "try" day and one free day. When kids "try" they show me the skills they have been working on to advance in levels. Free days allow students to enjoy using their skills that we have worked hard on in a way that they get to choose what and how they are engaged, with safety always being the focus. Free days also allow me a chance to observe the students using those skills. I can see their comfort level and their willingness to explore.

At the end of each school year the 3rd-6th graders go to Rolling Hills. We have developed a "confidence test" that each student will take prior to going into the wave pool. Our goal is always the safety of our students and ensuring they possess that confidence and knowledge necessary to enjoy their wave pool experience.
If you wonder what kind of "swim" day your child has, here is the schedule for the year. W=Work day, T=Try (test) day, and F=Free Day. This is the general guide and I do my best to follow it. Occasionally it will adjust due to school schedule. Feel free to ask if you have questions. [email protected]

Swimming Skill Levels

I have created a bit more specific education and goals with the swimming programs. Students are all assessed to determine what level they are at and they can then work through the levels to improve at their own pace. Each week will be either a work week or a testing week. A work week means they are working on their skills with my help. On testing weeks they can ask to test a skill that they have practiced. Below are detailed descriptions of each level. I have recently added a level 6 and will upload that information soon. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Level #
Description
Picture
Introduction to Water Skills: This level is designed to help students get comfortable in the water. To enter Level One, students must have passed preschool aquatics or be five years old or older. As they progress through Level One, students will gain confidence putting their head underwater and learning how to float and kick on front and back.
Picture
At Level 1a, students can:
  • Enter and exit the water using ramp/ladder/side of pool
  • Move comfortably through the water
  • Blow bubbles in the water
  • Bounce up and down in chest-deep water, staying upright
Picture
 At Level 1b, students can:
  • Fully submerge their face in the water
  • Float on their front with adult support
  • Float on their back with adult support
  • Retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool
Picture
At Level 1c, students can:
  • Hold their breath for 3 seconds underwater
  • Facing down, kick with their feet while holding a board
  • Facing up, kick with their feet while holding a board
  • Walk in the water with alternating arm movements
Picture
Fundamental Aquatic Skills: This level is designed to help students gain confidence with floating in the water and starting to practice more formal swimming movements (e.g., kicking). Before starting Level Two, students must have demonstrated confidence with all Level One skills.
Picture
At Level 2a, students can:
  • Demonstrate any of the skills from Level One if asked
  • Enter the mid-pool (deeper water) by ladder or by the side of the pool
  • Go from a standing position to a floating position
  • Climb out of the pool on the side (without using the ladder)
Picture
At Level 2b, students can:
  • Float or glide on their front, unsupported, and then recover
  • Float or glide on their back, unsupported, and then recover
  • Breathe rhythmically while bobbing in and out of water (x10)
  • Flutter kick on front and back with board and no assistance
Picture
At Level 2c, students can:
  • Float on their back, using arm movements (finning) to stay afloat
  • Demonstrate back crawl arm action
  • Combine front crawl stroke with alternating arm action and flutter kick
  • Combine back crawl stroke with alternating arm action and flutter kick
Picture
Stroke Development: This level is designed to help students develop greater coordination of their movements and develop basic proficiency with two strokes (front crawl and back crawl). Students also prepare to pass the first swim test. Before starting Level Three, students must have demonstrated confidence with all Level Two skills.
Picture
At Level 3a, students can:
  • Demonstrate any skill from Level Two if asked
  • Bob in the water, submerging the head completely
  • Retrieve objects from the bottom, eyes open, no support
  • Push off from the side of the pool and glide, face down
Picture
At Level 3b, students can:
  • Bob in deeper water (slightly over head) and travel to safe area
  • Push off from the side of the pool and glide, face up
  • Jump into the deep end from the side of the pool
  • Coordinate arms and legs for back crawl
Picture
At Level 3c, students can:
  • Coordinate arm stroke for front crawl with breathing to side
  • Dive from side of pool from kneeling position
  • Reverse direction while swimming on front
  • Reverse direction while swimming on back
  • Pass the deep end test (swim 25 yards any stroke, no stopping, no touching bottom; then tread water for 30 seconds without difficulty)
Picture
Stroke Improvement: This level is designed to help students further develop their proficiency with front crawl and back crawl and start learning about breaststroke. Before starting Level Four, students must have demonstrated confidence with all Level Three skills.
Picture
At Level 4a, students can:
  • Demonstrate any skill from Level Three if asked
  • Bob in the water in the deep end
  • Dive from the side of the pool from a standing position
  • Scull on their back for 30 seconds (similar to treading water, but leaning back in the water and using arm sweeps to stay afloat)
Picture
At Level 4b, students can:
  • Demonstrate buoyancy and floating positions in the deep end
  • Demonstrate rotary (circular) breathing in chest-deep water
  • Demonstrate elementary backstroke (with frog kicks) for 25 yards
  • Demonstrate breast stroke (arms) with kicking for 10 yards
Picture
At Level 4c, students can:
  • Demonstrate front crawl with rotary breathing for 25 yards
  • Demonstrate breast stroke kicking for 10 yards with board
  • Demonstrate back crawl for 25 yards
  • Demonstrate turning at wall (change of directions)
Picture
Stroke Refinement: This level is designed to help students further develop their proficiency with front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and start learning about the butterfly stroke. Students also prepare to pass the second stage of the deep-end swim test. Before starting Level Five, students must have demonstrated confidence with all Level Four skills.
Picture
At Level 5a, students can:
  • Demonstrate any skill from Level Four if asked
  • Pass the second stage of the deep-end test with proficiency (two lengths of the pool without touching bottom and 1 minute treading water)
  • Demonstrate the butterfly dolphin kick
  • Demonstrate the butterfly arm stroke
Picture
At Level 5b, students can:
  • Demonstrate proficiency at elementary backstroke (with frog kicks) for 25 yards
  • Demonstrate proficiency at front crawl for 25 yards
  • Demonstrate proficiency at breast stroke for 25 yards
